Switch to Electric: Join the Sustainable Fairfield Demo Day

If you’re thinking of giving up gasoline powered landscaping equipment – either your own or equipment used by landscapers around your home – you’ll have an opportunity to view some electric powered equipment alternatives at a Conscious Cleanup Campaign Demo Day sponsored by Sustainable Fairfield with Cultural Lawns, LLC.

The Conscious Cleanup Campaign is an initiative recently launched by Sustainable Fairfield to promote a community dialogue within the Town of Fairfield on the health hazards of gasoline powered landscaping equipment, leaf blowers in particular.

The Demo Day will be held at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, 385 Center Street in Southport on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.

Informational presentations on the hazards of gas-powered equipment also will be offered at the Fairfield Woods Library, 1147 Fairfield Woods Road, on Sunday, Nov. 10 from 1:30 to 2:30 pm, and via a webinar hosted by the CT Audubon Society (CAS) on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 7:30 to 9 pm.

Sign up for the Nov. 10 session at this page on the Fairfield Public Library website; you can access the Nov. 20 CAS event via this Zoom link:

Gas powered leaf blowers are well documented as harmful and polluting. These blowers pollute our local neighborhoods, backyards, schools and towns with large amounts of fossil fuel-derived particulate matter, associated with risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and forms of dementia. The Environmental Protection Agency has shown that leaf blowers and other gas-powered lawn and garden equipment expose workers and the public to high levels of toxic and carcinogenic emissions such as benzene, butadiene, formaldehyde and fine particulates. The equipment is also a leading cause of noise pollution, affecting mental health and hearing.
