...and cheaper than you think

Be a local hero. You too can help Connecticut reach its goal of 125,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2025. And the government wants to help.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and the Environment’s EV 101 page is a must if you are beginning your search. They offer informative content on electric vehicles, charging and maintenance, a fun video on one couple’s search, and even a locator map for charging stations. (No range anxiety in this state…)

Once you have decided to buy, The Connecticut Hydrogen and Electric Automobile Purchase Rebate (CHEAPR) offers incentives of up to $5,000 for Connecticut residents who purchase or lease a new (they are transitioning to used vehicles as well) eligible battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric or fuel cell electric vehicle. There are currently over 30 eligible vehicles available and the list keeps getting bigger.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)

A BEV is a vehicle that obtains all its power from energy stored in rechargeable battery packs. BEVs use electric motors and do not use an internal combustion engine.

MSRP Cap: $42,000

Incentive: $1,500 for >200mile range, $500 for under 200 mile rang

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)

A PHEV is a vehicle that can be powered either by its internal rechargeable battery or an internal combustion engine or electric generator powered by gasoline to extend the range of the vehicle.

MSRP Cap: $42,000

Incentive $500

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs)

A FCEV is a vehicle that is fueled with hydrogen but emits no pollutants, only water and heat. A fuel cell located in the car converts hydrogen to electricity which powers the electric motor to drive the vehicle.

MSRP Cap: $60,000

Incentive: $5,000

Three Easy Steps to your rebates:

  1. Purchase or lease an eligible vehicle from a Connecticut franchised automobile dealer.

2. Your dealer will complete and submit your CHEAPR application at the time of purchase or lease of the eligible vehicle and you will need to complete a short survey.

3. The incentive amount may be credited to the final purchase or lease price of the car to lower your monthly payments; or you can decide to receive the incentive directly by Electronic Funds Transfer.
